This is a tradition dating back centuries, which is rooted in the traditional rituals connected with fire, which are very common in the Italian inland between Christmas holidays and January.

Pescopennataro (IS), Italy - January 2018. During the celebration of San'Antonio Abate, held in the village on the night of 16th January, the so-called "pork of St. Antonio" is a prize in the lottery dedicated to the saint, as tradition wants it. This celebration interrupts the empty and static winter nights with a bonfire, the blessing of the animals and songs and dances that often go on all night long.

It is strictly linked to the a miraculous apparition of the Madonna on 11 June 1576 to a peasant after a terrible hailstorm.

Like many of his ge- neration, after a life spent working abroad, he enjoys his retirement in the tranquillity of his native village, nowadays almost empty.
Vastogirardi (IS), Italy -July 2017. Felice Di Tella, born 1931, is the last village crier still in activity in the villages of the Altomolise. The crier used to read out loud along the streets of the village the orders of the authorities and the presence of sellers in the village market square.
